The King Who Took the Lashes

Hey there,

Have you ever wrestled with the idea that God is both completely loving and completely just?

On one hand, we love the thought of a God who is kind, merciful, and full of grace. On the other, we know a holy God can’t just ignore the wrong things we’ve done. Sometimes those two truths feel like they’re pulling in opposite directions. How can both be true at the same time?

There’s a simple popular story of late that helps me picture it so clearly.

There was once a king who was known as the most loving and the most just ruler anyone had ever seen. One day people realized someone was stealing from the royal treasury. Because he was just, the king made a decree: whoever was caught would get ten lashes in front of the whole kingdom.

The stealing didn’t stop, so the punishment went up… then up again… until finally it was forty lashes. Everyone knew that was a death sentence as none had ever survived so many.

When they finally caught the thief, the whole kingdom gasped. It was the king’s very own daughter.

Rumors started flying. What would he do? Would he pardon her? That wouldn’t be just. Would he have her lashed? That wouldn’t be loving.

The day came for her punishment. She was brought forward and tied to the post. The executioner raised the whip…

Just as the first lash was about to fall, the king stood up, walked down from his throne, took off his robes, and wrapped his own body over hers. He looked at the executioner and said, “Go ahead.”

The executioner hesitated. “Your Majesty… I can’t hit her without hitting you.”

The king simply replied, “Then hit her.”

Every single lash meant for his daughter fell on him instead. The king died that day… and his daughter walked free.

Justice was satisfied.
Love was poured out.

That’s a beautiful picture of what God has done for us.

The Bible is honest about our situation: we’ve all sinned and fallen short (Romans 3:23). A just God can’t pretend that never happened. But a loving God doesn’t want us to stay under that penalty either. At the cross, love and justice collided in an amazing way:

“God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement… so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.”
— Romans 3:25-26

God didn’t choose between being loving and being just. In Jesus, He showed us He is fully both. The punishment we deserved landed on Him, and the freedom we could never earn is freely given to us.

So today, if you’re feeling the weight of something you’ve done wrong, or if you’re wondering whether God’s love really reaches that far… remember the King who stepped in and took the lashes.

You’re not left hoping He’ll just overlook things.
You’re invited to trust the One who already paid the full price.
