When the Night Out Goes Perfectly Wrong (and Why That’s Actually Okay)
Hey there,
If you’ve ever watched the 2014 comedy Moms’ Night Out, you know exactly how this story goes. Three exhausted moms finally carve out one night away from the chaos. What could possibly go wrong?
Everything. Car chases, lost kids, a parakeet… you name it. By the end of the night, their “perfect break” is a total disaster — and somehow one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in years.
As a dad, I laughed the whole way through… because I’ve lived it from the other side. I’ve been the guy left at home thinking, “How hard can this be?” only to have the house look like a war zone by 8:30 p.m.
Motherhood is basically one long Moms’ Night Out — beautiful plans colliding with beautiful chaos.
But here’s the good news straight from God’s Word:
“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” (Proverbs 31:25-28, NIV)
I love that last part. Her husband praises her. That’s my job. That’s our job.
The Proverbs 31 woman wasn’t perfect. She was simply anchored in God. Her strength wasn’t in flawless execution; it was in fearless trust. And she could laugh at tomorrow because she knew who held her days.
Application this Mother’s Day:
To the moms: Give yourself permission to laugh at the chaos. Those spilled drinks, marker-on-the-couch moments, and 2 a.m. worries? They’re part of the sacred, messy work of raising humans. You’re not failing — you’re in the trenches where real love grows. God sees every quiet act of love you do when no one else is watching.
To us dads and everyone else: Let’s do better at praising our wives and honoring the moms around us. Not just with flowers or brunch (though those are good!), but with words, help, and genuine gratitude. Let’s carry more of the load and speak blessing over them out loud: “You’re doing a great job. I see you. God sees you.”
If you’re a mom who feels like your whole season has been one comedy of errors… you’re in great company. Keep showing up. Keep loving. The Lord is clothing you with strength and dignity, even on the hard days.
And maybe this weekend, let Dad take the kids for a couple hours so you can actually have that night out — preferably one with less jail time (<- watch the movie).
And if you haven’t seen Moms’ Night Out in a while (or ever), grab some popcorn and watch it this weekend. It’s currently streaming on fuboTV and available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and a few other platforms. It’s the perfect light-hearted reminder that we’re all in this beautiful, chaotic parenting journey together—and laughter is one of the best gifts we can give each other.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for moms. Thank You for the way they pour themselves out every single day. Clothe them with Your strength. Help us husbands and children to honor them well. Teach all of us to laugh at the days to come because we trust You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
